‘I do not want to be married’
On July 22, 2017, we conducted a workshop with 12 women, ranging in age all the way from 18 to 57, at the Blind People’s Association, Mumbai.
The workshop revolved around relationships, choice and self-esteem. ‘I do not want to be married. A lot of rejections and the fear of abandonment has convinced me I should not get married,’ shared one participant.
Together, we questioned the common assumptions around marriage and disability and the expectations society has for blind women. We also explored consent and informed choices in relationships, and participants shared some of their own desires and hopes.
